Cannes: Johnny Depp to Play College Professor in 'Richard Says Goodbye'

The indie drama will be director Wayne Roberts’ follow-up to his feature debut ‘Katie Says Goodbye.’

Johnny Depp has set his next project.

The actor is teaming with up-and-coming filmmaker Wayne Roberts for Richard Says Goodbye, where he will play a college professor that receives a life-changing diagnosis that causes him to throw every previously held caution to the wind.

IM Global will fully finance the feature, which is being produced by Greg Shapiro and frequent Jeff Nichols collaborator Automatik’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones.

Richard Says Goodbye will be presented to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival, with IM Global handling international rights and CAA handling all domestic.

Roberts, an NYU grad, made his feature directorial debut last year with the Olivia Cooke-starrer Katie Says Goodbye.

Depp will next be seen reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the fifth Pirates movie, Dead Men Tell No Tales. He is also set for a trip on Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express and will be seen in the Warner Bros. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel.

Roberts is repped by CAA. Depp is repped by CAA and Bloom Hergott.
